Commentary

The inscription was at some point in Kiev, either in the Museum or in the Repository of Material Objects, Institute of Archaeology, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, however I was not able to locate it.

Karyshkovsky believed that the fragment constituted the final part of a decree and contained the list of names "of those who sealed it," as in the decree of Kokkeios (I 2), dated to 181 B.C.E. This suggestion is easily assailable due to the large chronological gap between the two monuments: we have no grounds for expecting no change in the political institutions of Tyras over the period of 400 years. It is safer not to attempt to identify the document type beyond a generic "list of names."

1. The restoration of the name Perikles is almost certain, although in principle other names, such as Περικλείδης or Περίκλυτος, are possible. It is unclear whether the name was in the Nominative or Genitive (being, in that case, a patronymic).

5-7. The restorations of names, from which only the first two letters or other fragments are preserved, are approximate - the possibilities are too many to list.

All fully preserved names are Greek.
