Commentary

Solomonik mistook a defect in the stone surface for the vertical of a rho, whereas even photographs clearly show a sigma. This mistake led her to propose an incorrect analogy (from Bulgaria) for our text.

At the same time, the architectural parallels from Chersonesos and Bakla cited by Solomonik appear convincing, as well as her proposed date on the basis of the archaeological material - XIIth - 1st half of XIIIth century. It is not possible to be certain about what building the arch belonged to, but a church is a likely candidate.
