Fell asleep: a servant [of God, ...], chief priest, in the 6th indiction... in the year...
Commentary
The text of the inscription was transcribed by Latyshev in 1883 at the Museum of Novorossiysky University. It was not possible to find any information about it in Odessa. Judging by the shape of the monument, it may have been an insert (possibly an old cornice) for a wall over a grave (see commentary for V 319). The placement of Text 2 suggests that the stone was later reused again.
1. On the formula, see Introduction IV.3.F.e. It does not occur in the Northern Black Sea region before the Xth century C.E.
2. The title of the deceased was apparently introduced with ὁ καί (cf. V 340).
The palaeographic features (cf. the shape of stigma) are very similar to those of V 340 (1078 C.E.). This particular affinity, and also the similarity with V 319 allow us to propose that the inscription originates in Bosporus.
