Commentary
The weight, as many other inscribed monuments from the excavations of Nicorescu, had probably been taken to Jasi, but subsequently lost, and now its whereabouts are unknown. Nicorescu surmised that the original weight of the object was 3 minae or 1309,8g. The meaning of the inscription is not clear. It might be an abbreviation of a name that begins with Μητρο-, with a mistaken transposition of letters. Nicorescu advocated the reading ΜΕΤΡΟ(ΝΟΜΩΝ), which requires two corrections in the text and a doubtful expansion. His reading cannot be accepted. Equally doubtful is the analogy with the name Μητῶρος, made in SEG 3. The name is attested only once in a dedication of the VI century B.C.E. from Didyma.
